About pasture-raised eggs & practices

What does pasture-raised actually mean?

At Ecolibrium Farm, it’s a commitment to health. Our hens have 24/7 outdoor access and live in mobile sheds that move to a fresh patch of pasture every week. They forage for bugs, seeds, and fresh fodder, ensuring a vibrant life for the hen and a better egg for you.

What is the difference between pasture-raised and free range?

"Free range" hens often live in large, static sheds. Because chickens are descendants of jungle fowl, they instinctively avoid open, unprotected spaces to stay safe from predators, often staying indoors 95% of the time. Pasture-Raised means they actually live outdoors, using our mobile caravans as a "portable canopy" for safety.

Why are pasture-raised eggs better for health?

Healthy soil equals a healthy gut. Our hens' forage-heavy diet creates a robust "gut ecology" rich in minerals and microorganisms. This results in eggs higher in Vitamin D, Omega-3s, and Vitamin A, with deep orange yolks and superior flavour.

What is your regenerative farming approach?

We use chickens to heal depleted, sandy soil. By mixing leaf litter with nitrogen-rich manure, our hens' natural scratching creates "in-place" compost, building up to 30cm of topsoil in six months. We also brew a "nature-based Kombucha" (probiotics) for their water to inoculate the soil via their manure.

About our chickens

What breeds of chickens do you raise?

We raise Australorps (hardy, incredible foragers) and ISA Browns (calm temperament, consistent layers). This balance ensures a stress-free flock that thrives in an outdoor environment year-round.

How much space do your hens have?

While "free range" allows 10,000 hens per hectare, our density is less than 50 hens per hectare. We use 50m x 50m rotational paddocks to ensure they always have fresh ground while staying close to the safety of their caravans.

What do you feed your chickens?

Our baseline is a premium, spray-free and GMO-free Australian grain mix (wheat, barley, sorghum). This is supplemented by natural pasture forage (bugs, grasshoppers) and a natural mineral supplement for strong shells.

Are your chickens vaccinated?

We use a "minimal intervention" approach. We utilise only three "old-school" biological immune stimulants on day one via their water. Because they live in UV sunlight with a healthy microbiome, they have a "natural health buffer" that makes the 25+ vaccines used in industrial sheds unnecessary.

Are your eggs certified organic?

No, by choice. Organic feed is 40% more expensive, which would make our eggs inaccessible to local families. We focus on Regenerative practices—building soil and using spray-free grains—without the administrative "red tape" of certification.
